Arquest Architecture, working with German charity Claim for Dignity, has developed a concept for a compact, modular library for a primary school in Arequipa, Peru. The 'tiny house' design prioritises local materials and craftsmanship, with a view to future expansion.

Proposed for the school's existing courtyard, the mini-library is situated near the main building among trees. Its north-facing slanted roof optimises solar panel installation. Access is via a small terrace and double doors that open fully, revealing a central desk and shelving.

The library's design is based on a 1220mm grid, aligning with standard plywood board dimensions. Its structure uses 100x100mm planed timber for both vertical and horizontal elements. Book storage lines the longer walls, while the shorter ends provide entry and illumination. A slanted roof incorporates a clerestory with louvred openings for daylight and ventilation.

The design incorporates off-site fabrication of bays for on-site assembly. Its modularity allows for future expansion, with the rear facade designed for easy detachment and reinstallation to accommodate additional bays. Internal plywood panels are full-width to minimise waste, and the 100x100mm structural frame is expressed externally, complemented by 25x25mm battens for facade texture.
